Waugh Bridge Nightlife
Houston, TX 2008
Though life can seem chaotic at times, Order underlies all experience.
Lawfulness lies at the foundation of Life. Natural Law cannot
be circumvented. I accept Guidance by the All-Knowing.
I conform to Love, against Which there is no law.
Love fulfils the Law, for the Law is Love. Loving,
I am in synch with the Universe and all is well.
I am so grateful. And so it is.

The Waugh Street Bridge is located near downtown Houston. Bats live up inside this overpass. At night they drop out of the narrow slits under the bridge and fly in circles remaining under the bridge. As the sky darkens, bursts of bats fly off into the night towards the city lights to forage for insects. The bridge crosses Buffalo Bayou, a green space now and once a shipping channel for small wooden barges. The flying is furious as I imagine the bats reorient themselves with the magnetic field of the earth and the temperature and movement of the air, waking up and exercising. People gather to watch and photograph this nightly event. Oh. It is pretty stinky with bat guano and urine and eye-watering ammonia in the air.
